Capturing your Unique Family

As a photographer, I love being able to watch families who love, respect, and admire one another.

It is one of the highlights of my career to be able to glimpse into so many happy relationships.

I strongly believe that a family photo session is more than just showing up to smile into the camera for a few minutes. It’s a rare opportunity to freeze time and capture your loved ones at the exact stage of life they’re in right now. I want our time together taking photos to feel like a fun outing and not a stuffy or stressful item that needs to be checked off the to-do list.

My number one goal as a family photographer is to not only cultivate a comfortable environment where clients feel at ease but to give families timeless memories that they can look back on for generations to come.

Having said that, it’s important to note that your overall experience while taking family pictures will require some effort from both you and me. There are a few ways you can get ready for your session that will help your family have the best possible experience. Let’s chat about what you can expect from working with me and how you can best prepare yourself for it.

Before your Photo Session

Planning ahead of time is key to a successful photo session. As your photographer, I want to learn more about you! I love being able to hop on a call and chat with my clients after they book so that we can meet face-to-face before our session. I will also send you a client questionnaire that will help me get a feel for your specific family dynamic. Both of these things will help me best tailor your experience to your unique family.

I am always happy to offer advice on outfit planning, answer questions about what to bring to your session, and provide tips on how to keep family members happy while we are together. As a general rule of thumb, I like to suggest that you eat a good meal beforehand, arrive early, and come prepared with any extras your family might need, like snacks/water/small toys.

During your Photo Session

One essential aspect of capturing your family’s authentic selves is taking photos of you being yourselves. While posed pictures are beautiful and definitely have a place in the photography world, candid moments are where real, genuine emotions can shine through. When you look back at your photos in five years’ time, those are the images that will make you feel like you’re back in that moment.

In order to achieve those authentic smiles and emotions, it’s important to get comfortable with me and my camera before we really start the session. Especially when there are little kids involved, I love to incorporate playful poses and fun prompts. This is usually through things like dads tossing their toddler in the air or moms on a short walk hand in hand with their preteen.  It may take some patience, but eventually, we’ll snag the kind of portraits that celebrate your unique family members.

After your Session

If you’ve successfully finished a family photo session, take a second to congratulate yourself. You did it! Pulling off can be a lot of work, so it might be a fun idea to reward yourself (and your family) with a trip to get ice cream while you wait to get your photos back. A little post-picture outing is never a bad idea.

Within a week or two, I will send you the final images from your photo session. (Yay!) This is done through an online gallery where you will be able to scroll through each image and zoom in on the ones you love most. I’ll give you the full rundown before the session, but from there you will be able to download all the files to your computer. From there, it’s happy printing!

At the end of the day, I want you to be able to look back at the images from your session and see the treasure of emotions that they hold. These are photos that will tell the story of your family: the love you have for one another and the bond that you share. I can’t wait to work together!
