Authentically Capturing Your Story

As a second shooter in Arizona, I consider it a privilege to contribute to the comprehensive story of the day.

Having two photographers at your wedding is the best way to ensure that no details go unnoticed.

I recently had the privilege of stepping into the role of second shooter for a fellow wedding photographer in Gilbert, Arizona and friend of mine, Chelsey Michelle. Chelsey and I worked together for several sessions and I had the best time collaborating with and learning from her.

The concept of a second shooter during a wedding or event is pretty common in the photography industry. As a bride or groom, it’s important to fully understand the value of having a secondary photographer. Personally, I love working with other creatives in this capacity! To me, it’s more than just capturing additional images, it’s about painting an authentic picture of the couple during their wedding day without missing any special moments.

Together, both the main and the secondary photographers can seamlessly weave the intricate threads that make up a wedding. Doesn’t that sound like exactly what you want for your big day? In this post, I want to outline a few of the key responsibilities of a second shooter at a wedding.

Provide Support for the Primary Photographer

Essentially, second shooters are an extension of the main photographer. Both photographers are on the same page and work seamlessly with one another. A huge part of their role includes providing steadfast support to the primary shooter.

Sometimes, that support comes in the form of anticipating the needs of both the main photographer and the couple or capturing behind-the-scenes content for an additional perspective on the day. They might also assist with last-minute details to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Regardless of the task, second shooters are key instruments in contributing to the magic that unfolds behind the scenes.

Work Independently when needed

Beyond being a support, working with a second shooter creates more photo opportunities for the bride and groom. Both photographers can work independently of one another and be in two different places at once, or get two perspectives of the same moment. For example, with two shooters you can capture both the bride and groom getting ready at the same time.

Some of my favorite photos that I’ve ever taken have been ones I captured as a second photographer. While the main shooter focuses on the orchestrated shots, my lens is drawn to the in-between moments that unfold organically. Usually, all it takes is an additional angle of shared laughter or longing glances to portray the real magic of people in love.

Shoot with the Couples best interests in mind

Both the primary and the secondary photographers share the overarching goal of preserving each moment in the most accurate way possible. In my photography, I always want the feelings and emotions you experience while looking at your wedding photos to mirror the ones you felt while living the moment in real time.

After all, it’s the authentic, candid moments that communicate each couple’s unique story. Your wedding day is an extension of that story, and it deserves to be captured in the right way, with photographers who are on the same page about it. Two photographers are the most efficient and effective way to capture those memories.

To me, being a second shooter isn’t just a role. It’s an experience that allows me to keep a physical record of the intricate details and emotions that make a wedding unforgettable. It was such an honor to work with Chelsey Michelle to get the chance to work as a secondary photographer. Spending time with like-minded people while doing something we both love is just a dream come true.

Oftentimes, the main photographer spends a lot of time dedicated to the bride, so as a second shooter it is so fun to get to focus more on the groom. Groom sitting in a chair tying his shoes on his wedding day captured by Cayleen Ann Photography. #Ca
